Ottawa was eliminated from the playoffs on Saturday, dropping Game 4 of its first-round series 4-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Logan Stankoven’s fourth goal of the series proved to be the difference in the third period. With Carolina on the power play, Stankoven corraled a bounce off the end boards and buried the puck into an open Senators net for the lead.
Sebastian Aho scored an empty-netter before Dylan Cozens scored for Ottawa to make it 3-2. Aho then added another empty-netter.
The result didn’t come without its fair share of drama, however, as the two sides took part in multiple scrums during a chaotic second period in which multiple big hits were thrown. The most notable check was thrown by Senators defenceman Tyler Kleven, which forced Alexander Nikishin to leave the game.
While the rough stuff took up much of the period, both the Senators and Hurricanes found the back of the net, with Taylor Hall and Drake Batherson scoring less than two minutes apart.
It marks the second straight first-round exit for the Senators.
Carolina will now await the winner of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers in the second round.
