Serah Williams won’t be staying in Connecticut to begin her professional career after all.
The Connecticut Sun selected the UConn Huskies forward in the third round (33rd overall) of the WNBA Draft on Monday, but she wasn’t a member of the state’s pro team for long.
The expansion Portland Fire acquired Williams in a draft-night trade, sending Taylor Bigby and a 2027 third-round pick to Connecticut, ESPN’s Kendra Andrews reported.
Portland took Bigby 37th overall on Monday.
Williams played for Canada at the GLOBL JAM under-23 tournament last summer after moving to Southern Ontario from New York for the final few years of high school.
Williams played for teams in Toronto and Niagara Falls, Ont., before playing her first three years in the NCAA at Wisconsin.
Williams transferred to UConn for her final year and saw fewer minutes for the powerhouse team. She averaged 6.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 17.4 minutes at UConn after going for career bests in points (19.2), rebounds (9.8) and minutes (32) the previous season at Wisconsin.
The Huskies went undefeated this season before losing to South Carolina in the national semifinals.
Williams joined a Fire team that took fellow Canadian Bridget Carleton first overall in the expansion draft and has two Canadian assistant coaches in Daniel Boiago and Sefu Bernard.
