The Los Angeles Chargers are adding some CanCon to their defence.
The Chargers selected Ottawa native Akheem Mesidor with the 22nd pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday.
The defensive end now becomes the sixth Canadian in NFL history to be selected in the first round, joining N’Keal Harry (2019), Danny Watkins (2011), Tim Biakabutuka (1996), Tony Mandarich (1989) and Mike Schad (1986).
Last season at the University of Miami, Mesidor tallied 17.5 tackles for loss and an ACC-leading 12.5 sacks. He totalled 35.5 sacks in six collegiate seasons with Miami and West Virginia.
Mesidor’s running mate with the Hurricanes, Rueben Bain Jr., was selected 15th overall by the Buccaneers on Thursday.
