The Mabrey family may have a lot to say during Year 1 for the Toronto Tempo.
Guard Dara Mabrey has signed a training camp contract with Canada’s new WNBA team, the team announced on Wednesday.
Dara is the younger sister of Marina Mabrey, who the Tempo selected in the expansion draft and later signed to a two-year max contract. In fact, Marina was signed to the WNBA’s first million-dollar deal following the league’s increased salary cap, according to Tempo president Teresa Resch.
As for Dara, the five-foot-seven guard has spent the last couple of seasons playing overseas after graduating from Notre Dame in 2023. The now-26-year-old spent five seasons in the NCAA, averaging 10.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and shot 38 per cent from deep over 135 games.
The younger Mabrey most recently played four games in Australia’s NBL with the Norwood Flames. She averaged 20.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals.
Toronto’s front office will have some work to do in the next couple of weeks as the team will have to cut its roster down to 12 players and two development spots. As things stand, the Tempo are set to enter training camp with 18 players, the maximum allowed, and would be at 19 with Dara Mabrey. Which stands to reason, she or another player could be moved into one of the team’s two development slots in the coming days.
The Tempo start action on their inaugural season in just a couple of weeks. Pre-season begins on April 29 and Opening Night is on May 8, with a matchup against the Washington Mystics.
