One of the Calgary Flames‘ top prospects is heading back for a second year of collegiate hockey.

Centre Cole Reschny will return to the University of North Dakota to play out his sophomore season, Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg reported Monday.

Reschy, drafted 18th overall by the Flames in 2025, enjoyed a solid freshman year for the Fighting Hawks, tallying six goals and 29 assists in 36 games. His side was eliminated by eventual runner-up Wisconsin in the first round of the Frozen Four.

However, according to Steinberg, the Flames wanted the 19-year-old to take extra time to develop at the college level and Reschny’s camp agreed.

Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, the Macklin, Sask., native starred with the Victoria Royals in the WHL, where he registered 48 goals and 104 assists in 127 regular-season games.

He also suited up for Canada at the 2026 world juniors, grabbing four goals and one assist in seven games.
